The Legend
According to legend the columns of the Giant's Causeway are the remains of a causeway built by the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool) who was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Angus Benandonner.
Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the sea so that the two giants could meet. But Finn MacCool learns that his Scottish challenger is twice his size and is the strongest giant in the world. Fionn hides from Benandonner and his wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him into a giant cradle. When Benandonner knocks on the door Oonagh invites Benandonner in, tells him her husband is out hunting, and asks him to wait.
While they wait Oonagh gives Benandonner a strong drink along with scones made from rock. When she shows Benandonner their baby he sees how big the 'baby' is and believes that it's father must be the biggest giant in the world. He flees back to Scotland in fright destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down.
