Cafetiere Brew Guide
The The cafetiere (or French Press) has been popular since the swinging sixties. Many kitchens have one somewhere so it’s time to dig it out of that cupboard and make some great coffee. With a little patience this is one of the best ways of making coffee.
You’ll need
- Your favourite Causeway Coffee – beans or fresh-ground for cafetiere
- Grinder (unless using pre-ground coffee)
- Cafetiere
- Scales
- Timer
- Hot water (just off the boil, preferably filtered)
- Cup/mug(s)
Let’s get brewing!
- If starting with beans, grind for Cafetiere. Aim for a medium-to-coarse size (around the consistency of table salt). You will need 35g of coffee per 500ml water. A good fresh grind is key to consistently great-tasting brew.
- Slowly pour the hot water over the ground coffee. Start the timer and wait four minutes.
- Stir the “slurry” (coffee and water mixture) and remove any foam/material from the top.
- Wait another four minutes then gently push the plunger down to just above the coffee sediment at the bottom (this avoids stirring up the sediment again).
- Pour delicious coffee into your cup or mug.
Enjoy the great taste of a freshly-brewed coffee!
Tip: If you are not going to drink all the coffee straight away, pour any remaining into another jug. As with tea, coffee can over-brew, developing a bitter taste.
