Bialetti Brew Guide
The Bialetti moka pot was invented and began production by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. It uses a unique method of steam percolation to produce espresso coffee, and is found in over 90% of Italian homes.
The pot (available in different sizes and for different hob types) consists of three main components: the base water chamber, ground coffee chamber, and top chamber (where the brewed coffee collects).
You’ll need
- Your favourite Causeway Coffee – beans or fresh-ground
- Grinder (unless using pre-ground coffee)
- Bialetti moka pot
- Tea towel
- Hob
- Hot water (preferably filtered)
- Cup/mug(s)
Let’s get brewing!
- If starting with beans, grind slightly coarser than for espresso. A good fresh grind is key to consistently great-tasting brew.
- Fill the lower chamber with hot (near-boiling) water up to the level of the safety valve.
- Place the coffee chamber onto the lower chamber and fill with ground coffee (tap if you like, but do not tamp down).
- Holding the lower chamber with the tea towel (so as not to burn your hand!), screw the top chamber on tightly to establish a good steam seal.
- Place the pot on a hob ring at low-to-medium heat. As the water boils and steams the coffee, you will hear a gurgling sound of coffee filling the top chamber.
- Once the sound changes (indicating a full top chamber), remove the pot from the heat and serve.
Enjoy the great taste of a freshly-brewed coffee!
The pot may be cleaned simply by disassembling and rinsing in hot water (never use a dishwasher). Check the rubber gasket regularly for cracks and replace if necessary.
